During our twenty years of living and working in the picturesque mountain town of Atenas, friends, family, and clients alike often ask: “What’s a typical day like in a Costa Rican village?”
The short answer? Fabulous.
But, as with all things in life, the truth is far more nuanced. With time and experience, we’ve learned to intentionally curate our days — to design a life that reflects what we love most. One of the great gifts of maturity is knowing what brings joy, meaning, and balance. That, to us, is the essence of pura vida — a life well lived.
Morning
Gerardo and I are both early risers, usually awake between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. I love the quiet just before dawn — that suspended moment before the world stirs to life. Then comes the first light, and with it, an explosion of sound and movement. The day begins, vibrant and full of promise.
Before I leave the bedroom, I meditate for twenty minutes, then savor a cup of coffee while journaling for ten or fifteen minutes. Afterward, I glance through emails and messages — a quick touchpoint with family, friends, and clients around the world.
Breakfast happens between 7:30 and 10:00 a.m., usually on the terrace overlooking our gardens and the emerald hills beyond. The mornings in Atenas are pure magic: butterflies and hummingbirds flit between blossoms, the air feels cool and clean, and the sun gradually warms the valley below.
If we have clients, the day begins promptly at nine. If not, breakfast lingers a little longer, followed by a gym session or a long walk through the coffee plantations, exchanging greetings with the farmers as they start their workday.
Because we value homegrown and handmade living, mornings are also a time for small rituals — baking sourdough bread, making fruit preserves, canning tomato sauce, or preparing yogurt and fermented pickles. These aren’t chores; they’re creative acts that connect us to the rhythm of life. Luxury, for us, is having the time to do things by hand — together — nourishing not just the body, but the spirit.
Midday to Afternoon
When we’re working with clients, our day begins at nine and wraps up around one. Lunch follows at two — a family meal always centered around fresh, homegrown ingredients. Crisp greens from the garden, tomatoes still warm from the sun, grilled meats, tropical fruits, and local cheese — a true farm-to-table feast.
On quieter days, you’ll find me in the garden from morning until lunch, happily pruning, planting, or harvesting. When errands call, I plan them carefully — leaving at 9:30 and returning by two, perfectly timed to avoid traffic and keep my peace of mind intact.
And when the routine feels too predictable, we escape to the coast — just a 45- to 60-minute drive from Atenas — for a long lunch by the sea. There’s nothing quite like fresh-caught fish, the sound of the surf, and sunlight dancing across the water. On the way home, we often stop by a local fisherman’s home to pick up seafood for the week ahead.
After lunch, our siesta ritual begins. Around three, I meditate briefly, then nap for about an hour — especially blissful during the rainy season, when cool air drifts through open windows and the rhythmic patter of rain on the roof creates the perfect lullaby.
By late afternoon, it’s time for coffee or tea. Around 4:30 or 5:00, we brew a fresh cup and enjoy a light snack — often a tortilla de queso palmada with natilla, a hand-pressed cheese tortilla with a touch of sour cream. As I begin preparing dinner, I’ll chat with my mother, catch up with Gerardo, or unwind with a podcast.
Once a week, my mother and I indulge in one of our favorite rituals — an in-home massage. For nearly twenty years, it’s been our shared tradition. The gentle music, the scent of essential oils, the open air drifting through the house — it’s the purest form of pura vida self-care, and one of life’s simplest, most restorative pleasures.
Evening
Evenings in Atenas unfold at an easy, unhurried pace. Most nights revolve around family — supper at home, laughter echoing around the kitchen, and long conversations that drift late into the evening. If friends are visiting, the night might include a cocktail or two, a game of cards, or a little music under the stars.
On days when we’re too tired to cook, we’ll treat ourselves to takeout from our favorite sushi restaurant in town — or venture out for dinner and a bit of entertainment. Though Atenas is small, it offers a surprising variety of dining options. And when we crave something truly special, Santa Ana, Escazú, and San José are only a short drive away, with everything from world-class dining to intimate wine bars.
We both enjoy the cinema, especially the VIP theaters that have become popular across Costa Rica. Reclining seats, in-theater dining, and the quiet indulgence of a good film — it’s a simple luxury we never take for granted.
When guests are in town, we might head to San José for a night out — not the club scene, but the kind of places that make an evening memorable: a cozy jazz bar, a restaurant with live music, or a salón típico where locals dance to the rhythms of Costa Rican cumbia.
Being creatures of habit, we’re usually in bed by nine, grateful for another full day of living la pura vida.
Because in the end, life isn’t about filling every moment. It’s about savoring them — the laughter, the quiet, the scent of rain, the warmth of connection. That’s the real luxury. That’s la dolce vita. That’s la pura vida.
