Sometimes it’s a story from friends who visited a few years ago.
Other times it’s a trip of your own that leaves an impression far deeper than you expected.

These are the kinds of conversations we hear often from people exploring the idea of living in Costa Rica.

From Atenas, residents enjoy convenient access to the international airport, the capital city of San José, world-class medical care, and a variety of pristine Pacific beaches.
All of these things are true.
But taken together, they can sometimes sound as though they belong in the pages of a glossy travel brochure.
One of Atenas’ greatest qualities is something far simpler — and often overlooked.
Atenas is not a resort town.
It is a real Costa Rican town with its own rhythm and character, one that simply happens to be ideally located and blessed with many of the qualities travelers often search for.
Spend a little time here and you begin to notice the small details that make a place feel like home. You walk down the street and start recognizing familiar faces. People greet you with a smile as they pass by. Vendors at the weekly farmers market remember which fruits you like and set them aside before you even ask.
It is a place where friendships form naturally — with both locals and fellow expats who have chosen to make Atenas their home.
Like any small town, Atenas has its quirks. You will find nearly everything you need here, though perhaps not everything you might want. There are small imperfections that remind you this is not a curated resort community, but a living, breathing town with its own traditions and personality.

The Reality of Moving Abroad
The reality of taking the leap and moving abroad is undeniably exciting. For many people, it rekindles a sense of curiosity and adventure that may have been absent since childhood.

We often observe that those who arrive with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn tend to adapt beautifully. They understand that adjusting to a new country takes time and that the process itself becomes part of the journey.
After more than twenty years living in Costa Rica, I’m still learning and adapting. In many ways, that’s part of what keeps life here interesting.

When approaching a decision as significant as moving to another country, preparation becomes essential.
For many people, this means visiting multiple times before making any long-term commitments. A short vacation can provide a glimpse of a place, but spending time in the community where you are considering living offers a much deeper understanding of the rhythm of daily life.
Take time to observe, explore, and ask questions. Conversations with both locals and fellow expats often reveal valuable perspectives. You may hear different opinions — sometimes even contrasting ones — but within those conversations you begin to develop a more complete picture of life in the community.
Spending time with local professionals can also be helpful. Speaking with real estate agents, attorneys, and others familiar with the process allows you to understand the broader view of property ownership in Costa Rica — the opportunities, the challenges, and the practical considerations involved.
Above all, avoid making rushed decisions. Thoughtful buyers tend to take their time, gathering information and allowing their understanding of the place to develop naturally.
And yet, after all the research, visits, and conversations, there remains one final element that is just as important.
