What to Know Before Making the Leap

The Moment the Idea Appears
For most people, the idea begins quietly.
At first, it is little more than a passing thought — a moment when you begin to imagine life somewhere different. The pace of the life you’ve always known begins to feel a little exhausting, and the possibility of something simpler starts to enter the conversation.
For many people, Costa Rica enters the conversation this way.
Sometimes it begins with an article.
Sometimes it’s a story from friends who visited a few years ago.
Other times it’s a trip of your own that leaves an impression far deeper than you expected.
“We’ve been thinking about Costa Rica for years…”
“Our best friends visited and can’t stop talking about it…”
“We went once — and we haven’t been able to get it out of our minds.”
These are the kinds of conversations we hear often from people exploring the idea of living in Costa Rica.
For many, an idea — or the glimpse of a dream — quietly becomes the foundation for something larger. Our imaginations begin to fill in the details. We picture what life might look like if things slowed down — if we stepped away from the pace of the rat race and returned to a more natural rhythm of living.
Then something interesting happens.
The idea lingers.
You return home and resume your normal routines, but every so often your mind drifts. You find yourself sitting at your desk daydreaming, or washing dishes while staring out the window, remembering the toucan you spotted in the jungle canopy. Small moments from a short visit begin to feel surprisingly meaningful.
And gradually a question begins to form:
Could we actually live like this?
Could life be slower?
More balanced?
More connected to nature and the rhythms of the day?
For many people exploring Costa Rica, this quiet curiosity is how the journey begins.
And somewhere along the way, the small mountain town of Atenas, Costa Rica often enters the conversation.
Why Atenas?
Over the years, Atenas has attracted considerable attention for what many describe as “the best climate in the world.” Its location within Costa Rica’s Central Valley is also undeniably appealing. From Atenas, residents enjoy convenient access to the international airport, the capital city of San José, world-class medical care, and a variety of pristine Pacific beaches.
All of these things are true.
But taken together, they can sometimes sound as though they belong in the pages of a glossy travel brochure.
One of Atenas’ greatest qualities is something far simpler — and often overlooked.
Atenas is not a resort town.
It is a real Costa Rican town with its own rhythm and character, one that simply happens to be ideally located and blessed with many of the qualities travelers often search for.
Spend a little time here and you begin to notice the small details that make a place feel like home. You walk down the street and start recognizing familiar faces. People greet you with a smile as they pass by. Vendors at the weekly farmers market remember which fruits you like and set them aside before you even ask.
It is a place where friendships form naturally — with both locals and fellow expats who have chosen to make Atenas their home.
Like any small town, Atenas has its quirks. You will find nearly everything you need here, though perhaps not everything you might want. There are small imperfections that remind you this is not a curated resort community, but a living, breathing town with its own traditions and personality.
And for many people considering living in Atenas, Costa Rica, that authenticity becomes one of the town’s greatest attractions.
For all of these reasons, Atenas has developed a long-standing and vibrant expat community that continues to grow — people who arrived years ago, often for many of the same reasons you may be exploring today.
The Lifestyle Shift
For most people, moving to Atenas eventually becomes more than a change of address. It becomes a shift in lifestyle.
Depending on where you are coming from, that shift may feel subtle — or it may feel quite profound.
The first thing many people notice when living in Atenas is the pace of life. Things simply move more slowly here. No one seems to be in a hurry. While that slower rhythm is often exactly what people are seeking, it can take a little time to adjust mentally after years of living at full speed.
Life begins to unfold differently.
Thanks to Atenas’ ideal climate, outdoor living naturally becomes part of daily life. Many homes are designed with large terraces and outdoor living spaces that rival — and sometimes exceed — the size of the indoor areas. These spaces become the heart of the home, where much of life takes place.
Living this way brings you closer to nature. You begin to feel connected to the surrounding environment rather than separated from it. The sounds of birds replace the background noise of traffic, and the rhythms of the natural world quietly shape the day.
Over time, community also becomes an important part of daily life. Atenas is a place where people know their neighbors and where friendships develop easily. Both local Costa Ricans and fellow expats contribute to a welcoming sense of belonging.
Daily routines often simplify themselves in the most pleasant ways. Morning coffee on the terrace becomes a small ritual. Lunch with friends stretches comfortably into the afternoon. Even watching the clouds drift across the surrounding mountains can feel surprisingly meaningful.
For many people, this is the moment when the deeper realization begins to settle in — the quiet understanding that life here simply feels different.
And often, that difference is exactly what they had been searching for.
The Reality of Moving Abroad
The reality of taking the leap and moving abroad is undeniably exciting. For many people, it rekindles a sense of curiosity and adventure that may have been absent since childhood.
But as rewarding as the experience can be, it also invites a deeper and more honest conversation before making the decision.
Living abroad requires patience and flexibility. It means accepting that things will often work differently than they do back home. Cultural differences, unfamiliar systems, and new ways of doing everyday tasks can all become part of the learning process.
In Costa Rica, there are moments when patience becomes essential. Navigating the bureaucracy of local and national government offices can take time. Language may present occasional challenges if you’re not yet comfortable with Spanish. Even simple things can require a different approach than what you’re used to.
None of this is meant to discourage — quite the opposite.
With the right mindset, these experiences become part of the adventure.
We often observe that those who arrive with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn tend to adapt beautifully. They understand that adjusting to a new country takes time and that the process itself becomes part of the journey.
After more than twenty years living in Costa Rica, I’m still learning and adapting. In many ways, that’s part of what keeps life here interesting.
How Thoughtful Buyers Approach the Decision
When approaching a decision as significant as moving to another country, preparation becomes essential.
For many people, this means visiting multiple times before making any long-term commitments. A short vacation can provide a glimpse of a place, but spending time in the community where you are considering living offers a much deeper understanding of the rhythm of daily life.
Take time to observe, explore, and ask questions. Conversations with both locals and fellow expats often reveal valuable perspectives. You may hear different opinions — sometimes even contrasting ones — but within those conversations you begin to develop a more complete picture of life in the community.
Spending time with local professionals can also be helpful. Speaking with real estate agents, attorneys, and others familiar with the process allows you to understand the broader view of property ownership in Costa Rica — the opportunities, the challenges, and the practical considerations involved.
Above all, avoid making rushed decisions. Thoughtful buyers tend to take their time, gathering information and allowing their understanding of the place to develop naturally.
And yet, after all the research, visits, and conversations, there remains one final element that is just as important.
Listen to your intuition.
How do you feel when you are here? How does the place resonate with you when you imagine calling it home?
Sometimes something can appear perfect on paper yet not quite feel right in reality. When that happens, it is often worth paying attention to that quiet inner voice. More often than not, if it whispers to you now, it will speak much louder later.
